Thanks A Lot, Old Farmer’s Almanac

This week the Old Farmer’s Almanac ruined the last days of summer vacation for thousands of people by publishing their prediction that this winter will be cold, snowy and generally miserable. The media picked up the story and generously added their own photos of bundled up people angrily shoveling driveways. At the risk of alienating our beloved readers, many of whom are still enjoying the last heirlooms and marinating in sunblock, it’s worth a discussion.

To recap in case you missed it, the 2016 Old Farmer’s Almanac states that this year anywhere that can have snow, will have snow. The Northeast can expect below-normal cold, the South will get snow, the Midwest won’t have as much snow as last year but will have colder temperatures, and the Pacific Northwest will have lots of snow and lots of cold. Now, the facts are that the almanac has a “secret formula” for their predictions, and they claim to be 80% accurate based on predictions since 1792. Maybe it’s a good prediction and maybe it’s a well-timed story, but it should make us stop and think. Fall is the time to prepare for a harsh winter, in winter it’s too late!

Harvest Right greenhouses are portable, sturdy and weather resistant and are adaptable to a variety of uses, including growing food and emergency shelters. The curved interior facilitates continuous solar collection and retention, so they are suitable temporary shelters for humans in winter. In fact, the ambient temperature inside our greenhouses can comfortably sustain life even in cold climates, mountains, deserts, or tropics. You can even safely operate a stove inside for heating and cooking. Our domes come in three sizes, and each can accommodate large amounts of food production, including in vertical space, with the least amount of energy waste.
