Things to Check When You Have a Vacuum Error

This vacuum error troubleshooting guide for freeze dryers provides step-by-step instructions for cleaning the system, inspecting components, running diagnostic tests, and contacting support to resolve vacuum pressure issues.

Vacuum Error Troubleshooting Guide for Freeze Dryers

Tools Needed:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Wrench (for older models)

Steps:

  1. Cleaning: Start by thoroughly cleaning the inside of your freeze dryer with soapy water, followed by a rinse with clear water. Don't forget to clean the shelf unit where the trays slide into.
  2. Shelf Unit: Disconnect the shelf unit to wash it properly.
  3. Air Out: After defrosting, open the freeze dryer door to air out the interior to prevent mold growth.
  4. Drain Valve: Ensure the drain valve at the back is completely closed before starting a new batch. Tighten it with a Phillips screwdriver if it seems loose.
  5. Check Vacuum Hose Connections: Disconnect the hose from both the freeze dryer and the vacuum pump. Examine the O-rings on each end for damage and ensure connections are secure. Use hand tightening for JIC fittings or a wrench for older models.
  6. Vacuum Pump Setup: The vacuum pump should be plugged into the back of the freeze dryer and powered on. For oil vacuum pumps, drain old oil, refill with new oil to the middle line of the sight glass, and avoid third-party accessories or modifications.
  7. Door Gasket: Inspect the silicone door gasket for cleanliness and damage. The door should connect securely to the gasket, creating a visible thin line around it when closed. Adjust the door by tightening the screws on the hinges if necessary, but ensure the door remains free to move.
  8. Dry Vacuum Test: With the interior chamber and shelf unit dry and clean, run a vacuum test. Ensure the drain hose is sloping downwards for water to exit completely.
  9. Vacuum Hose Reattachment: After checking the O-rings, reattach the vacuum hose, hand tightening the connections or using a wrench as required.
  10. Run the Test: Power on the freeze dryer, press the leaf logo to bring up the test screen, and select the vacuum test. The pump should turn on and the pressure should drop to below 500 mTorr within 15-20 minutes.
  11. Data Capture: If the pressure does not reach the desired level, capture freeze dryer data onto a thumb drive via the USB port, transfer it to a computer, and email it to Harvest Right support for further assistance.

This guide should help you troubleshoot vacuum issues with your freeze dryer. Always refer to your model's specific instructions for any variations in the process.
