How do I rehydrate freeze-dried food?

How to Rehydrate Freeze-Dried Foods

Freeze-dried foods are easy to store, quick to use, and simple to bring back to life! Here’s how you can rehydrate your favorite fruits, vegetables, meats, breads, and full meals.

Fruits and Vegetables

Enjoy as a Snack or Rehydrate

  • Freeze-dried fruits and vegetables are delicious right out of the bag—no rehydration needed!
  • If you want to rehydrate, there are several easy ways:

Fruits

  • For Smoothies, Cereal, or Oatmeal: Add dry fruit directly. It will soak up the liquid and rehydrate on its own.
  • For Baking (like pies or cobblers): Place the fruit in a bowl of cool water, cover, and let it sit until soft.

Vegetables

  • Raw Vegetables: Place in a large bowl of cool water, cover, and let sit. Some veggies, like green beans, may take a few hours to fully rehydrate.
  • Leafy Greens and Herbs: Spritz with water in a plastic bag, toss, and enjoy as you would fresh. You can also add them dry to smoothies or blend into a powder for soups and sauces.
  • Cooked Vegetables: Place in hot water for a few minutes, then drain and eat. You can also add dry vegetables directly to soups, stews, or sauces—they’ll rehydrate as they cook.

Meats and Proteins

Important Note

  • You can freeze dry meats either cooked or raw. If you freeze dry raw meat, always label it clearly and handle it as you would any raw meat.

Rehydrating Meats

  • Cooked Meat: Place in a bowl of hot or warm water or broth. Let it soak until tender (just a few minutes). Enjoy as is or use in recipes.
  • Raw Meat: Place in a bowl of cold water, cover, and refrigerate overnight or until fully rehydrated. Cook as you would fresh meat.
  • Sausages and Pepperoni: Place in hot water for a few minutes until tender.
  • Sandwich Meats: Place in warm water for 2–3 minutes, then pat dry with a paper towel.

Bread and Cakes

  • Bread: Wrap with a damp paper towel and place in a plastic bag in the fridge overnight. Or, wrap in a damp kitchen towel and leave on the counter, checking until soft.
  • For Stuffing: Add spices, then slowly stir in hot water until you reach the right consistency.
  • For French Toast: Soak bread in an egg and milk mixture until soft, then cook as usual.

Full Meals

  • Rehydrating Meals: Slowly add hot or warm water to your meal until it reaches the consistency you like.
  • Warming Up: You can heat your meal further in the microwave, on the stovetop, or in the oven.
  • For Pasta Dishes (like lasagna or spaghetti): Steaming helps keep them looking and tasting their best.

Tips for Best Results

  • Add water slowly—you can always add more, but you can’t take it out!
  • Use clean, cool water for fruits and raw vegetables; use hot water for cooked foods and meats.
