How do I perform a vacuum test on my freeze dryer?

To perform a vacuum test on your Harvest Right freeze dryer, please follow these instructions:

  1. Remove Shelves: Take out and disconnect the shelving unit from your freeze dryer.
  2. Clean and Dry Chamber: Ensure the inside of the chamber is clean and completely dry, including the drain hose.
  3. Close Drain Valve and Door: Make sure the drain valve is closed and the door to the freeze dryer is securely shut.
  4. Check Vacuum Hose: Verify that the vacuum hose is tightly connected to both the vacuum pump and the freeze dryer without any kinks.
  5. Oil Pumps: If you have an oil pump, check that it has fresh, clean oil and that the oil is clear.
  6. Turn On Pump: Switch the pump power to the 'I' (on) position.
  7. Connect Pump Power Cord: Ensure the pump's power cord is plugged directly into the back of the freeze dryer, not into a wall outlet. Check to ensure that the vacuum pump is turned to the on position.
  8. Power On Freeze Dryer: Turn on the freeze dryer and click the green leaf logo in the top left corner to navigate to the functional testing menu.
  9. Start Vacuum and Freeze Test: Click the vacuum and freeze buttons to start both components. Let them run for 15-20 minutes.
  10. Record mTorr Reading: After 15 minutes, note the mTorr (vacuum pressure) reading while keeping the components running.
  11. Proceed Accordingly: Depending on the mTorr reading, you will follow different steps to troubleshoot or confirm the system is operating correctly.
  • If the reading is above 2500 mTorr, there may be a significant leak or an issue with the vacuum pump.
  • If the reading is between 1000 mTorr and 2500 mTorr, there could be a minor leak or the pump may need maintenance.
  • If the reading is between 500 mTorr and 1000 mTorr, the system is likely functioning but may require a software update or further leak testing.
  • If the reading is below 500 mTorr, the vacuum system is performing well.

If the vacuum test indicates a problem, you may need to check for leaks, ensure the door seal is clean and properly seated, or perform maintenance on your vacuum pump, such as changing the oil or filters.
