How should I defrost and clean my freeze dryer between batches?

When your freeze dryer finishes a batch, it’s very important to make sure the chamber is completely defrosted, drained, cleaned, and dried before starting your next batch.

Why is this important?

Any leftover water—whether it’s ice on the chamber walls or droplets in the drain hose—can be pulled into the vacuum pump during your next batch. This can cause a vacuum error and interrupt your freeze drying process.

What should you do between batches?

  • Remove all water: Pull out the shelving rack and wipe underneath it, as water can sometimes pool there and may not be visible until the shelf is removed.
  • Defrost options: You can either run the defrost cycle (which heats the trays to melt the ice) or simply turn off the freeze dryer and leave the door open to let the ice melt naturally. The method doesn’t matter—just make sure all water is gone before starting the next batch (except for candy).
  • Candy exception: Candy contains very little water, so you can run up to 5 consecutive candy batches without defrosting. However, be sure to defrost and clean your chamber at least every 5 batches.

How to clean:

Use warm, soapy water and a dishwashing brush or any soft-bristled brush with a handle to clean between the shelves and all the way to the back of the chamber.

By taking these steps, you’ll help ensure your next batch runs smoothly and your freeze dryer stays in great condition!
