How to Change and Filter the Vacuum Pump Oil (Video)
What You’ll Need
- Harvest Right vacuum pump oil
- Harvest Right oil filter
- Paper towels (for easy cleanup)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Get Ready
- Gather your oil, oil filter, and paper towels.
- Make sure your freeze dryer is off and the pump is cool.
2. Drain the Old Oil
- Find the oil drain on your pump.
- Open the demister cap (the cap on top of the pump) to let air in—this helps the oil drain faster.
- Place the oil filter under the drain and pour the used oil into the filter.
3. Filter the Oil
- Let the oil drip through the filter into a clean container. This may take a little time—be patient!
- If the oil stops draining or the filter gets clogged, replace the filter cartridge.
4. Check the Filtered Oil
- Look at the filtered oil. It should be clear (like water).
- If the oil looks cloudy or has water in it, let it sit for a few hours or put it in the freezer. Water will separate from the oil and can be removed.
5. Refill the Pump
- If the oil is clear, pour it back into the pump through the demister opening.
- Standard oil pump: holds about 16.9 ounces (just over 2 cups)
- Premier oil pump: holds about 25 ounces
- If needed, add new Harvest Right oil to reach the correct level.
6. Finish Up
- Close the demister cap tightly.
- Wipe up any spills with a paper towel.
- Your pump is now ready for your next batch!
7. Replace the Filter Cartridge When Needed
- If the filter drains slowly or stops, it’s time for a new cartridge.
- You can buy replacement cartridges in packs from Harvest Right.
