Freeze Dryer Maintenance: Keeping Your Machine Running Well

One of the advantages of a Harvest Right freeze dryer is that the machine itself requires very little maintenance. The primary ongoing care task involves the vacuum pump.

**Vacuum Pump Oil Changes**

The vacuum pump is the heart of the freeze drying process. It creates the low pressure environment needed for sublimation. To keep the pump running efficiently, the oil needs periodic attention.

Oil typically needs to be changed or filtered every 20–30 batches, or whenever the oil becomes visibly dark and dirty. Many Harvest Right owners filter and reuse their oil to reduce waste and cut costs — the oil can often go through multiple filter cycles before needing to be replaced entirely.

**Defrosting Between Batches**

Between batches, ice builds up inside the chamber. Defrosting removes that ice buildup and helps the machine run efficiently. The chamber should be fully dry before starting a new batch.

**Common Mistakes to Avoid**

- Overloading trays or stacking food too thick (leads to longer drying times and uneven results)

- Never changing the pump oil (shortens pump life)

- Blocking airflow around the machine

- Leaving finished freeze dried food exposed to air too long before packaging (freeze dried food absorbs moisture from the air quickly)

**How Hard Is a Freeze Dryer to Maintain?**

For most users, very manageable. Beyond oil changes and defrosting, the machine largely takes care of itself. Harvest Right's patented smart technology monitors the cycle and alerts the user when the batch is complete.
