The video shows how to clean the interior and sight glass of a JB Oil Pump, specifically focusing on how to remove and clean the front cover of the vacuum pump.
Tools needed:
- 3/16 Allen Wrench
- Cleaner (parts, brake, carburetor cleaner, or mild soap and water)
Steps
- Drain the oil: Begin by draining as much oil from the pump as possible.
- Position the pump: Once the oil is drained, lay the pump on its back for better access to the front cover.
- Remove the bolts: Use the 3/16 Allen Wrench to remove all six bolts from the front cover.
- Detach the front cover: Gently wiggle the front cover away from the pump body, being cautious not to damage the rubber gasket.
- Clean the gasket and groove: Remove, clean, and ensure the gasket and the groove it sits in are very clean for a proper seal. This can involve using a q-tip for precision cleaning.
- Clean the cover: The face cover and sight glass can be cleaned with a range of solvents, but it's important to remove all residue of the cleaner used.
- Inspect the cover: If the pump is regularly power flushed, you may notice the front cover is relatively clean and has less grime, which is typically food particles from the vacuum chamber.
- Reinstall the gasket: Carefully place the gasket back into its groove, which may be slightly challenging due to the gasket being a bit larger than the groove.
- Reattach the front cover: Once the gasket is flat and seated, carefully replace the front cover onto the pump.
- Reinsert and tighten bolts: Put the six bolts back in and tighten them to just over finger tight, ensuring the seal is tight and the gasket isn't pinched.
- Check the seal: Look around the edges of the face to confirm a tight fit and proper gasket placement.
- Refill with oil: Finally, refill the pump with oil until the sight glass's tiny circle/hole is adequately covered with oil.
Note: The cleanliness of the gasket and its groove is critical for maintaining a proper seal, which is vital for the pump's performance.
